Joao Palhinha has been told he is still wanted at Tottenham Hotspur for next season, however his long-term future at the club remains unclear, according to TEAMtalk. The Portugal international joined Spurs on loan from Bayern Munich last summer with a pre-agreed £27million option to buy.
Palhinha initially made a positive impression under former manager Thomas Frank, but his form, like that of the team, proved inconsistent throughout the campaign. Despite this, the 30-year-old has reportedly regained favour under current head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who is a known admirer of his experience, tactical discipline, and leadership qualities.
Sources indicate that Palhinha himself is enjoying his second spell in London, having previously played for Fulham in the Premier League. However, a return to Portugal is now a growing possibility, with Sporting CP expressing strong interest in bringing the midfielder back to the Jose Alvalade Stadium. Benfica and Porto are also monitoring the situation closely.
Bayern Munich have reportedly ruled out a return for Palhinha, with sources suggesting they no longer see a future for him in Bavaria. The midfielder has accepted this and is now focused on determining his next career move. While Tottenham have communicated their desire for him to stay, no final decision has been made.
Palhinha is expected to carefully consider all available options in the coming weeks, with interest from Portugal intensifying. De Zerbi’s desire to retain him and the strong interest from several Portuguese clubs mean his future is set to be a key talking point for Tottenham this summer. His potential departure would leave a void in midfield, while a stay would provide De Zerbi with a proven Premier League performer.
