Giovanni Ventura is poised to take on a consultancy role at Torino, according to reports emerging from Italy. The news follows a lengthy meeting in Milan between Torino president Urbano Cairo and sporting director Davide Petrachi. Cairo had indicated after the recent derby match that a review of the club’s structure would take place, and Ventura’s potential appointment appears to be a direct result of those discussions.
While details of the role are still emerging, it is being described as a ‘superconsigliere’ position, suggesting Ventura will offer high-level advice to the club’s ownership and management. This is not a return to management for Ventura, who most recently managed Serie B side Venezia, but rather a strategic position within the club’s hierarchy. He left Venezia in February 2024, after a difficult spell where the club struggled to maintain a consistent level of performance.
Ventura previously managed Torino between 2016 and 2018, overseeing a period of relative stability and securing a ninth-place finish in Serie A during the 2016-17 season. His pragmatic and defensively-focused approach earned him a reputation as a capable tactician, though his tenure ultimately ended after a series of disappointing results. He is the father of current Torino player Alessandro Ventura.
Cairo’s decision to bring Ventura back into the fold suggests a desire to leverage his experience and knowledge of the club. Torino currently sit mid-table in Serie A, and the appointment could be interpreted as an attempt to provide additional support to Petrachi as the club aims to improve its performance and potentially challenge for European qualification. The club confirmed the meeting took place, but have yet to officially announce any agreement with Ventura.
