Aston Villa have renewed contact with Parma regarding goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, as Unai Emery’s side consider potential replacements for Emiliano Martinez, according to TEAMtalk. The Midlands club are assessing options should Martinez depart this summer, a possibility both the player and Villa are reportedly open to.
Villa have been extensively scouting the 23-year-old Japan international, including monitoring his performances at the World Cup, and are currently the most advanced in the transfer race. While no formal club-to-club contact has been made, discussions have taken place with intermediaries to gauge Suzuki’s interest.
Suzuki, dubbed ‘Gigi Buffon 2.0’ by Italian pundits, has impressed with his commanding presence and distribution skills, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most promising young goalkeepers. He began his development at Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan before spells in Belgium and Italy, and is considered a modern goalkeeper highly regarded within the game.
However, securing Suzuki will not be straightforward. Parma have placed a €40 million (£34m, $45m) release clause on the player’s contract, which runs until 2029, and would likely demand a fee in the region of €30m (£26m, $34.5m) to consider a sale. Leeds United are also monitoring the situation, viewing Suzuki as a long-term solution in goal as they rebuild their squad.
Interest extends beyond the Premier League, with Serie A clubs including Inter Milan, AC Milan, and Napoli also tracking the goalkeeper. Suzuki’s ball-playing ability makes him a desirable target for clubs employing a modern, possession-based style of football. Manchester United were previously linked before signing Senne Lammens. Villa may need to act quickly to secure Suzuki’s signature as competition intensifies, particularly with Japan’s progress in the World Cup potentially raising his profile and value. A move to the Premier League is increasingly probable should a substantial bid be made.
