Cristian Volpato has indicated a potential move to Fiorentina following the conclusion of his participation with the Australian national team, stating he intends to focus on rest before considering his club future. The 24-year-old forward recently finished a season with Sassuolo, where he played under current Fiorentina manager Fabio Grosso. According to reports in Italy, the connection with Grosso is a significant factor in Volpato’s interest in joining the Florence-based club.
Volpato joined Sassuolo in January 2025 from Roma, initially on loan before the move becoming permanent in June of the same year. He made 18 appearances for the Neroverdi across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing two assists. Prior to his time at Sassuolo, the Brazilian-born forward came through the Roma youth system, making his Serie A debut in 2022 and becoming a sporadic first-team player before seeking more consistent playing time.
Fiorentina are looking to bolster their attacking options ahead of the 2026-27 Serie A season, and Grosso, appointed as their new head coach last month, is reportedly keen to reunite with Volpato. Grosso previously worked with the player at Sassuolo, and their existing relationship could facilitate a swift transfer. Fiorentina finished eighth in Serie A last season, missing out on European qualification, and Grosso has been tasked with improving their attacking output.
The transfer fee has not yet been disclosed, and negotiations between the two clubs are expected to begin in earnest following Volpato’s return from international duty. While Volpato has expressed his admiration for Fiorentina, he has stopped short of confirming a deal is in place. He stated his priority is a period of rest after his involvement in the recent international tournament. The addition of Volpato would provide Fiorentina with a versatile attacking option capable of playing across the front line, and could prove a shrewd move given Grosso’s familiarity with the player’s capabilities.
