Hamburger SV defeated SC Freiburg 3-2 in a thrilling Bundesliga encounter at the Volksparkstadion. Bakery Jatta opened the scoring for HSV with his first Bundesliga goal, while Luka Vušković and Fabio Baldé added to the tally. Igor Matanović scored twice for Freiburg, but his efforts proved insufficient.
The match began at a lively pace, with Jatta’s 14th-minute goal giving the hosts an early lead. The Senegalese winger tapped home after a dangerous ball from Albert Grønbæk, sparking celebrations amongst the Hamburg supporters. However, Freiburg responded quickly, with Matanović leveling the score just two minutes later after a low cross from Lukas Kübler.
Matanović’s celebration towards the HSV fans drew attention, referencing his previous spell with local rivals St. Pauli. The first half continued with both teams creating chances, Fabio Vieira hitting the post for Hamburg, but the teams went into the break tied at 1-1.
The second half saw a drop in tempo until Vušković’s moment of brilliance in the 64th minute. The Croatian defender’s free-kick took a deflection off the wall, wrong-footing Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu and restoring HSV’s lead. This goal is particularly notable as Vušković was likely playing his final home game for HSV following a successful loan spell, with several European clubs reportedly interested in securing his services.
HSV extended their advantage just three minutes later when substitute Baldé finished a swift counter-attack to make it 3-1. Matanović pulled one back for Freiburg in the 87th minute with a header from a corner, but Hamburg held on for the win. Vieira hit the post again late on, with a subsequent rebound ruled offside.
The victory is a significant result for Hamburg, while Freiburg’s defeat complicates their pursuit of European qualification. Vušković’s future remains a key talking point, with his performances attracting attention from across Europe and a permanent transfer likely this summer.
