Former Tottenham Hotspur winger Chris Waddle believes Cristian Romero has never fully committed to the club and anticipates the captain will depart this summer. The Argentina international joined Spurs from Atalanta on loan in 2021, with the move becoming permanent the following year.
Romero has made 156 appearances for Tottenham, playing a key role in their Europa League triumph last season, where he was named Man of the Match in the final against Manchester United. However, his time in North London has also been marked by disciplinary issues, having received four red cards for the club, including two in the Premier League this season.
The centre-back was appointed captain ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, replacing Son Heung-Min, but also publicly criticised the club’s transfer policy in February, describing the squad as “disgraceful” and lacking sufficient depth in their fight against relegation. Roberto De Zerbi’s side currently sit 17th in the Premier League, one point above West Ham United with three games remaining.
Despite Romero’s season being cut short by a knee injury sustained in April against Sunderland, Waddle suggests a sale is probable, regardless of Tottenham’s final league position. Speaking to GOAL, Waddle stated, “Romero, for me, I don't think he's ever wanted to be at Tottenham, personally. But I think it's a fair chance that they’ll cash in on him, even if they stay up.”
Waddle also speculated about the future of Micky van de Ven, suggesting the defender could also attract interest, particularly if he performs well at the upcoming World Cup. According to The Telegraph, several Champions League clubs are already monitoring Romero’s situation. While a knee injury currently prevents Romero from showcasing his abilities, a strong performance at the World Cup could significantly increase his transfer value.
Tottenham will be closely following the results of their relegation rivals, particularly West Ham’s match against Arsenal, before hosting Leeds United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
