Mainz 05 forward Nelson Weiper will spend the 2026/27 season on loan at Austrian Bundesliga side Sturm Graz, the German club confirmed on Thursday. The move is intended to provide the 21-year-old with consistent first-team football to further his development.
Weiper has been with Mainz since 2021, progressing through their youth system before becoming a regular member of the first team. He has made a total of 74 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring seven goals. While he has shown promise, opportunities for regular starts have been limited, prompting the decision to seek a loan spell.
Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert emphasized the club’s belief in Weiper’s potential, stating he remains “an outstanding German striking talent.” Bungert explained that both he and Weiper agreed that consistent playing time at a high level was now essential for the player's progression. Sturm Graz, according to the club, presented a comprehensive plan to offer Weiper that opportunity, including participation in multiple competitions.
Sturm Graz finished second in the Austrian Bundesliga last season, securing qualification for the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds. This will provide Weiper with a platform to play in European competition, something he has not yet experienced in his career. The loan move allows Mainz to retain ownership of the player while ensuring he gains valuable experience.
The loan is expected to be crucial for Weiper’s long-term development, potentially increasing his value and strengthening his claim for a regular place in the Mainz squad upon his return. This move benefits both clubs, providing Sturm Graz with a promising young attacker and Mainz with a pathway for Weiper to reach his full potential.
