Werder Bremen have completed the signing of Swiss striker Cedric Itten from Fortuna Düsseldorf, adding an experienced forward to their squad ahead of the new Bundesliga season. The club confirmed the arrival of the 27-year-old on a free transfer, taking advantage of a release clause in his previous contract.
Itten joins Werder after a prolific season with Düsseldorf, where he scored 15 goals in the 2. Bundesliga during the 2025/26 campaign. Despite Düsseldorf’s relegation to the 3. Liga, his performances attracted significant interest, with Werder ultimately securing his signature. A clause in Itten’s contract with Fortuna stipulated it would become invalid should the club be relegated beyond the second tier, allowing him to move without a transfer fee.
Werder Bremen’s sporting director lauded Itten’s physical attributes and goalscoring record, stating he is a valuable addition to Daniel Thioune’s attacking options. The club specifically highlighted his aerial ability and overall presence in the penalty area as key strengths. Itten’s arrival addresses a need for a consistent goalscorer as Werder look to improve their attacking output in the Bundesliga.
Notably, the move reunites Itten with head coach Thioune, with whom he previously worked at Fortuna Düsseldorf. According to sources close to the deal, the positive relationship between the player and coach was a significant factor in Itten’s decision to choose Werder. He made a strong impression under Thioune early in the season, establishing himself as Düsseldorf’s primary attacking threat before the campaign concluded.
Currently, Itten is representing Switzerland at the 2026 World Cup, demonstrating his continued international recognition. He has previously earned several caps for the national team, adding to his experience at a high level of competition. His addition provides Werder with a proven goalscorer and a player familiar with the demands of professional football. This transfer bolsters Werder’s attacking line and strengthens their position as they prepare for a competitive Bundesliga season.
