Werder Bremen midfielder Samuel Mbangula is the subject of interest from other clubs, according to the Bundesliga side’s head of first team football, Peter Niemeyer. Niemeyer confirmed that several teams have enquired about the 22-year-old Belgian, acknowledging his “exciting profile” has drawn attention. The player joined Werder Bremen last summer from Juventus for a reported €10 million fee.
Niemeyer revealed the information during an interview with the club’s website, ‘DeichStube’, stating that Mbangula’s name is “definitely being mentioned in the market”. Despite the external interest, Niemeyer also sought to reassure supporters, adding that there are currently “no concrete offers” for Mbangula or any other Werder Bremen player. He confirmed the club are currently planning with Mbangula as part of their squad.
Mbangula’s first season with Werder Bremen has not seen him fully establish himself as a regular starter, despite the significant investment made in his transfer. Prior to joining the German side, he spent time in Juventus’ youth system, but struggled to break into the first team, making only a handful of appearances for the Italian giants. He has represented Belgium at youth levels, demonstrating potential that prompted Werder Bremen to secure his services.
Recent comments from Mbangula’s agent, Grace Diamouangana, also suggested a willingness to consider other options, although she stated at the time that no concrete proposals had been received. The possibility of a transfer after just one season at the Weserstadion could be influenced by Werder Bremen’s desire to recoup some of their initial investment, or by Mbangula’s own ambition to find a club where he can secure more consistent playing time. A sale could also allow the club to reinvest in other areas of the squad as they look to improve their Bundesliga standing.
Werder Bremen narrowly avoided relegation last season, finishing 10th in the Bundesliga, and will be hoping to build on that foundation in the upcoming campaign. Mbangula’s potential departure could prompt the club to seek a replacement in midfield, or potentially offer more opportunities to existing players within the squad.
