Schalke 04 have announced the signing of Maximilian Wöber on a free transfer, adding the Austrian defender to their squad following his departure from Leeds United. The 28-year-old joins the Bundesliga side after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with the English club.
Schalke 04 director of professional football Youri Mulder highlighted Wöber’s experience as a key factor in the decision to pursue the defender. Mulder stated that Wöber brings over 170 top-flight appearances and familiarity with the Bundesliga from his previous spells with Borussia Mönchengladbach and Werder Bremen. The club are hopeful he can recapture his best form under the guidance of the coaching staff, including Miron Muslic.
Wöber spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Werder Bremen, but his campaign was hampered by injury. Prior to joining Leeds in January 2023, the centre-back had established himself as a regular in the Bundesliga, playing a significant role for Mönchengladbach. He initially signed for Leeds as a replacement for the injured Liam Cooper, making 18 Premier League appearances for the Whites.
Speaking after completing his move, Wöber expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity at Schalke 04. He described the club as a “very special club” following their promotion and is eager to embrace the challenge of playing in the Bundesliga for the Royal Blues. Wöber stated his intention to integrate quickly with his new teammates.
