VfL Wolfsburg have agreed a €1.5 million deal to sign Robert Glatzel from Hamburger SV, Sky Germany reports. The transfer is subject to the 32-year-old forward completing a medical, which has been scheduled for next week. Glatzel has agreed personal terms with Wolfsburg on a contract that will run until 2028.
The move sees Glatzel return to the Bundesliga after a prolific spell with Hamburg in the 2. Bundesliga. He joined HSV in 2019 from Mainz 05, initially on loan before making the transfer permanent. During his time with the club, Glatzel established himself as a key player, scoring 84 goals in 150 appearances across all competitions. He was the 2. Bundesliga top scorer in the 2023-24 season with 18 goals, despite Hamburg missing out on promotion to the Bundesliga in the playoff against Stuttgart.
Wolfsburg, relegated from the Bundesliga at the end of the 2023-24 season, are undergoing a significant rebuild under new management. The club will be competing in the 2. Bundesliga next season and will be looking to mount an immediate challenge for promotion. Glatzel’s arrival is intended to bolster their attacking options and provide a proven goalscorer as they aim to return to the top flight. The club finished 14th in the Bundesliga last season, triggering their relegation.
Glatzel began his professional career with Heidenheim before moving to Kaiserslautern and then Mainz. While at Mainz, he experienced Bundesliga football but struggled to consistently find the back of the net, scoring just seven goals in 48 appearances. His form dramatically improved at Hamburg, where he became a consistent performer and a fan favourite. The transfer represents a significant opportunity for Glatzel to prove himself once again in the Bundesliga and contribute to Wolfsburg’s promotion ambitions. The addition of an experienced goalscorer like Glatzel could prove vital in a competitive league.
The fee of €1.5 million represents a relatively modest investment for Wolfsburg, given Glatzel’s goalscoring record. Hamburg will be losing a key player, but the transfer fee provides them with funds that can be reinvested in strengthening their squad as they continue their pursuit of promotion. This move has the potential to benefit both clubs as they navigate their respective challenges in the upcoming season.
