VfL Wolfsburg are in advanced talks to sign goalkeeper Tjark Ernst from Hertha BSC, but the transfer is currently on hold as the player considers his options with interest also coming from Ajax and Celtic, according to Wolfsburger Allgemeine and Aller-Zeitung.
The potential move comes as Wolfsburg prepare for the departure of Kamil Grabara, leaving a vacancy in their goalkeeping ranks. Negotiations with Ernst’s representatives are reportedly progressing well, with a broad agreement in place, though the 21-year-old has not yet committed to the transfer.
Ernst has been a regular feature for Hertha BSC in the 2. Bundesliga, making 28 appearances this season and establishing himself as a promising young talent. He joined Hertha’s youth setup in 2018 and progressed through the ranks, becoming the first-choice goalkeeper last season. His performances have attracted attention from several clubs, both within Germany and abroad.
As Wolfsburg await Ernst’s decision, the club are simultaneously exploring alternative goalkeeping options. Stefan Ortega, recently released by Nottingham Forest, is being considered as a potential free transfer signing. Ortega previously played in the Bundesliga for Arminia Bielefeld and has experience at the highest level.
Another candidate is Michael Zetterer, the current second-choice goalkeeper at Eintracht Frankfurt. Zetterer has served as understudy to Kevin Trapp, but is seeking more regular first-team opportunities. The report suggests Wolfsburg are evaluating both Ortega and Zetterer as viable alternatives should Ernst opt to move elsewhere. The club’s swift action demonstrates their intent to secure a suitable replacement for Grabara before the start of the new season.
The outcome of Wolfsburg’s pursuit of Ernst will likely dictate their approach to the goalkeeper market, potentially leading to a quick move for either Ortega or Zetterer if the Hertha shot-stopper chooses another destination.
