VfL Wolfsburg have initiated discussions with Thiago Silva regarding a potential move to the Bundesliga side, according to Kicker. The approach comes days after Wolfsburg’s relegation from the Bundesliga and just after Silva secured the Liga Portugal title with FC Porto.
The 41-year-old Brazilian centre-back is available on a free transfer following the conclusion of his contract with Porto. Kicker reports that Wolfsburg see Silva as a potential key figure in their squad rebuild, valuing his extensive experience as they navigate a return to the second tier of German football. However, the report notes that these discussions are currently in a preliminary stage and may not progress further.
Silva joined FC Porto for the 2025/26 season, making eight appearances as the club won the Portuguese league title. Prior to that, he enjoyed a distinguished career with clubs including AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, winning league titles and Champions League trophies. He is also a veteran of the Brazilian national team, earning 113 caps and scoring seven goals for the Seleção.
Alongside Wolfsburg’s interest, Silva is also attracting attention from two of his former clubs. AC Milan and Chelsea are both reportedly considering a move for the defender, though Chelsea’s interest is understood to be in a coaching capacity. Silva is currently undertaking his UEFA A Licence education in Scotland, suggesting a potential transition into management is on his mind. His current market value is estimated at €600,000.
Should Silva opt to join Wolfsburg, he would likely slot straight into the starting eleven, providing leadership and a calming presence in defence. The move would represent a significant coup for the club as they attempt to mount an immediate challenge for promotion back to the Bundesliga. The veteran’s decision will likely hinge on whether he prioritizes regular playing time or a transition into coaching.
