Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade is exploring options for a return to European football this summer after becoming frustrated with his limited role at St James’ Park, according to TEAMtalk. Newcastle could be open to a loan move for the German international.
Woltemade arrived at Newcastle last summer in a deal worth approximately £70 million from Stuttgart, but his first season in the Premier League has not met expectations for either party. Initially deployed as a central striker due to injuries and tactical needs, a position not considered his strongest, the 24-year-old has still contributed seven Premier League goals and three assists.
Sources indicate Woltemade has appeared unhappy recently, starting only one of Newcastle’s last four matches, raising concerns about his role and long-term fit within the squad. He is now actively considering his options, with a return to European football emerging as a strong possibility. While Newcastle are not actively seeking to move him on, they would consider an exit under the right conditions.
Given the current market, the club acknowledge recovering the near-£70 million investment after only one season is unrealistic. Consequently, a structured loan move is being considered, though any temporary departure would require a financial package deemed worthwhile by Newcastle. Interest is already building from across Europe, with Borussia Dortmund among the leading contenders.
TEAMtalk reports that former club Stuttgart are also monitoring the situation and would welcome Woltemade back to the Bundesliga, particularly with Champions League football on offer. Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen are also keeping tabs on developments. Atletico Madrid have also discussed Woltemade’s profile internally as they evaluate potential attacking additions.
Those close to the player believe a return to a more fluid attacking system, allowing him to operate in multiple positions, would help him rediscover his best form. Despite his frustrations, Newcastle staff still believe Woltemade possesses significant technical quality and potential. However, with his growing unrest and increasing European interest, a summer departure is becoming increasingly likely. Fellow Newcastle forward Yoane Wissa could also be available this summer after failing to make the desired impact.
Woltemade’s potential move could allow him to reignite his career in a more suitable system, while Newcastle could free up funds and squad space for future signings.
