Wolves are set to announce Cesar Peixoto as their new head coach, following the dismissal of Rob Edwards, according to TEAMtalk. The decision comes after discussions initiated by influential agent Jorge Mendes, whose relationship with Wolves’ owners, Fosun, remains strong.
While the club has not yet publicly confirmed Edwards’ departure, reservations about his future reportedly began in December following a challenging start to his tenure at Molineux. Despite some improvements, Edwards was unable to prevent Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League, with the team securing only 20 points and three wins throughout the season.
Edwards was appointed after a controversial move from Middlesbrough, leaving Teesside after a promising beginning to his managerial career to take charge of his boyhood club. He is understood to have played a significant role in shaping Wolves’ recent recruitment strategy, including the return of Raul Jimenez and the acquisition of Kieran Trippier.
However, with new executive chairman Nathan Shi seeking to implement his own vision, talks with Peixoto progressed rapidly, leading to a full agreement. Mendes is believed to have actively promoted the Portuguese coach as a viable alternative, and Wolves were impressed by his tactical approach and achievements at Gil Vicente.
Peixoto, 46, enjoyed a playing career with Benfica and Porto, earning international caps for Portugal. His managerial career gained momentum recently after guiding Gil Vicente to a sixth-place finish in the Portuguese league, a career highlight that attracted attention from clubs across Europe. Sources indicate Wolves view him as an emerging coach with considerable potential.
Facing high expectations after relegation, Wolves are hoping Peixoto can lead them to an immediate return to the Premier League. The confirmation of Edwards’ dismissal is expected imminently.
