Nicolò Zaniolo is at the center of a growing dispute with Udinese, casting doubt on his future with the club less than a year after joining. The tension stems from a disagreement over contract renegotiation following a successful loan spell from Galatasaray, with Udinese reportedly offering a new deal laden with clauses that Zaniolo’s representatives deem unacceptable.
Zaniolo initially joined Udinese in August 2023 on a loan with an option to buy, signing a contract through 2029 at a salary of just over one million euros per year, with a promise to revisit the terms if his performances warranted it. He enjoyed a strong season, even earning consideration for the Italian national team. The player informed Udinese he would be willing to remain if his salary was increased, but the club proceeded with the purchase from Galatasaray for a fee of five million euros without a new agreement in place.
A breakthrough appeared to be reached last week, with reports suggesting an agreement on an 1.8 million euro salary for three years. However, the club then presented a revised contract containing numerous clauses, leading Zaniolo to refuse and cease training, citing a lack of clarity from the beginning of negotiations. He is currently absent from training with a medical certificate.
Several Italian clubs are monitoring the situation, including Juventus and AC Milan, with Juventus viewing Zaniolo as an alternative to Brahim Diaz. Bologna is also a potential destination, but only if Riccardo Orsolini departs. Zaniolo is seeking a straightforward three-year contract worth 1.8 million euros annually. Udinese is considering placing Zaniolo on the transfer list, potentially forcing a sale of a key asset. The club may even make him train alone indefinitely.
Juventus are also exploring other midfield options, including Franck Kessié and Leon Goretzka, but their high wage demands present a challenge. More affordable options like João Palhinha and Nemanja Matic are also being considered. Atalanta’s Ederson is a top target, but would require a significant fee and potential player sales to finance the move.
