Cédric Zesiger has completed a permanent transfer from FC Augsburg to BSC Young Boys, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Tuesday. The 28-year-old Swiss centre-back departs Augsburg after 18 months with the club, returning to the team he previously represented before a move to Germany in January 2023.
Augsburg sporting director Benjamin Weber explained that Zesiger requested the move due to personal reasons, stating the club were keen to accommodate his wishes. Weber added that a mutually agreeable solution was found with Young Boys, allowing Zesiger to return to Switzerland. The financial details of the transfer were not disclosed by either club.
Zesiger featured in 44 games for Augsburg across all competitions, becoming a regular fixture in their defence during his time at the WWK Arena. Prior to joining Augsburg, the defender had spent his entire professional career with Young Boys, progressing through their youth system and making over 100 appearances for the first team. He won the Swiss Super League title with Young Boys in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.
The move represents a return to familiar surroundings for Zesiger, who expressed gratitude to Augsburg for facilitating the transfer. He acknowledged the difficulty of leaving a club where he felt comfortable, but emphasized the importance of being closer to home. Young Boys currently sit second in the Swiss Super League, and Zesiger’s arrival will bolster their defensive options as they challenge for the title. This transfer provides Augsburg with the opportunity to reshape their defensive line, while offering Zesiger a chance to continue his career in a familiar and supportive environment.
