Ajax Amsterdam and Branco van den Boomen have mutually agreed to terminate the player’s contract, the club announced on Friday. The Netherlands international had returned to Ajax in the summer of 2023, but quickly fell out of favour with the first team.
Van den Boomen progressed through the Ajax youth system before his recent return. During three seasons with the club, the midfielder made 56 appearances, scoring five goals, a period coinciding with a challenging time for the Amsterdam outfit.
He spent the latter half of last season on loan at Angers, where he established himself as a regular starter. Prior to his return to Ajax, Van den Boomen enjoyed a successful spell with Toulouse from 2020 to 2023. He was named the best player in Ligue 2 during the 2021-2022 season while at Toulouse, and followed that up by winning the Coupe de France a year later.
This release from his Ajax contract has sparked speculation regarding a potential return to Ligue 1, given his previous success in the French league. The termination is reportedly by mutual consent, suggesting Van den Boomen also sought a change of scenery. The move allows Ajax to free up squad space and wages as they continue to reshape their team. Van den Boomen will now be free to negotiate with other clubs, potentially leading to a swift return to competitive football.
