Chelsea have made a higher offer for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand, attempting to disrupt a deal already in place with Atletico Madrid, according to reports from Spanish outlet Cadena Ser. The Blues are actively rebuilding their squad under new manager Xabi Alonso following a disappointing 2025/26 season and have already spent over £100 million on acquisitions including Geovany Quenda and Marco Palestra.
This move comes after Chelsea agreed to sell Andrey Santos to Manchester United for around £50 million, creating space in midfield. Hjulmand has been a prominent target for Arsenal, with the Gunners described as ‘very active’ in their pursuit, but Atletico Madrid were understood to be leading the race after agreeing a €40 million (£34m) fee with Sporting Lisbon.
Despite Chelsea’s increased offer and a ‘better contract’ proposal, Hjulmand is reportedly inclined to join Atletico Madrid, having already ‘given his word’ to the Spanish club. The midfielder is said to be willing to forgo potential earnings from an English club in order to play for Atletico, prioritizing the opportunity over financial gain.
The potential arrival of Hjulmand at Chelsea would further bolster Alonso’s midfield options. The club may also need to seek replacements if Enzo Fernandez departs amid reported interest from Real Madrid. Chelsea legend Marcel Desailly recently suggested that Fernandez may be better suited to a different style of play at Real Madrid, questioning his ability to fulfil a deeper defensive role.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Hjulmand highlights their ambition in the transfer market, but the player’s apparent commitment to Atletico Madrid presents a significant obstacle. The situation remains fluid, and a late change of heart from Hjulmand cannot be ruled out.
