Chelsea are intensifying their search for a new permanent head coach, with Xabi Alonso emerging as a leading candidate following his departure from Real Madrid earlier in the year. While initial reports suggested Alonso was unlikely to move to Stamford Bridge this summer, the anticipated permanence of Arne Slot at Liverpool and Michael Carrick at Manchester United have limited top-tier managerial opportunities for the Spaniard, leading him to consider the Chelsea position.
Transfer reporter David Ornstein has confirmed that Chelsea are now exploring a move for Alonso, though Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Fulham’s Marco Silva remain on the club’s shortlist. However, Alonso is currently considered the preferred option due to his proven track record and potential to instill discipline within the squad.
Alonso’s recent spell at Real Madrid, though brief, saw him win 24 of his 34 matches in charge before leaving in January. His exit wasn’t performance-related, but rather stemmed from a clash with the club’s attacking players who reportedly resisted his more detailed tactical instructions and defensive demands. This dynamic contrasts sharply with the current situation at Chelsea, where a squad in need of direction is likely to respond positively to Alonso’s leadership.
Bundesliga expert Ronan Murphy told FootballTransfers that Alonso’s experience at Real Madrid will have provided him with resilience and the ability to navigate media pressure. Murphy also highlighted Alonso’s success in elevating players at Bayer Leverkusen, where he transformed a struggling team into Bundesliga champions without a single league defeat, alongside winning the DFB-Pokal and reaching the Europa League final.
Alonso took over at Leverkusen in October 2022 with the club 17th in the Bundesliga, guiding them to a sixth-place finish and Europa League qualification in his first season. His tactical flexibility is also a significant asset, having successfully implemented both 3-4-3 and 4-4-2 formations during his managerial career. Across 174 senior matches, Alonso boasts an impressive 65% win rate.
Chelsea have endured a disappointing season, currently ninth in the Premier League after a recent run of poor form. The club’s significant investment in new players underscores the need for a manager capable of unlocking their potential, and Alonso’s tactical acumen, proven pedigree, and commanding presence make him an ideal candidate to restore Chelsea to a position of prominence.
