Manchester United have been linked with a potential swap deal involving Marcus Rashford and AC Milan’s Rafael Leao, according to a suggestion made by former United defender Jaap Stam. The proposal surfaced on Tuesday amid a busy day of transfer news across Europe.
Stam believes a change of scenery could benefit Rashford, who has experienced a dip in form for United this past season, scoring 10 goals in 43 appearances across all competitions. While still a key player, the 26-year-old has not consistently reached the levels expected of him since his breakthrough campaign. Leao, 25, has been a standout performer for Milan, contributing 13 goals and 10 assists in Serie A this season, and is known for his pace and dribbling ability.
The potential swap would address different needs for both clubs. United could bolster their attacking options with a player in Leao who offers a different profile to their existing forwards, while Milan might seek a proven Premier League goalscorer in Rashford to strengthen their own attack. Milan recently secured Champions League qualification for next season, finishing second in Serie A.
While the idea originated with Stam, it remains to be seen if either club will pursue the deal. Rashford is currently under contract with United until 2028, and Leao’s deal with Milan runs until 2028 as well, meaning negotiations would likely be complex. The financial implications of a swap deal, considering both players’ market values, would also need to be carefully assessed. This development comes as Real Madrid have been warned they will need to sell players to fund any potential acquisitions this summer, according to reports.
Other transfer news on Tuesday included Arsenal confirming the sale of Jakub Kiwior to Porto, Chelsea’s confirmed interest in Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, and former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca expressing his desire to return to management.
