Alonso Eyes Guler As First Liverpool Signing If Appointed
Xabi Alonso will reportedly make Real Madrid's Arda Guler his first major transfer target if he is appointed as the new Liverpool manager this summer. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Alonso has identified the 20-year-old Turkish international as a key target to bolster Liverpool's attack, particularly in the wake of Mohamed Salah's impending departure.
Alonso, the former Liverpool midfielder, is the current favourite to replace Arne Slot at Anfield, with the Dutchman under significant pressure after a difficult second season. Alonso, who left Real Madrid by mutual consent earlier this year, is said to be a strong contender should Liverpool decide to make a change in the dugout. The Spaniard handed Guler significant game time during his tenure at the Bernabeu and is reportedly keen to reunite with the player at Anfield.
Guler, 20, has contributed four goals and 13 assists in 45 appearances for Real Madrid this season. Despite his age, he has become a regular in Carlo Ancelotti's squad, but his long-term future at the Spanish giants is a regular topic of speculation. The report suggests Alonso views the young playmaker as a top candidate to help fill the creative void that will be left by Salah's exit.
However, any deal would be complex. Real Madrid are under no pressure to sell one of their most promising young talents, and the report states the club currently has no intention of parting with Guler. Any potential move would also likely require a fee in the region of his estimated market value of over €70 million.
A move for Guler would signal a major statement of intent from Liverpool and a new manager, should Alonso be appointed. It would represent a significant investment in a young, high-upside talent to lead the club's attack in the post-Salah era.
