Incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso may face a significant squad overhaul upon his arrival on July 1, with several key players reportedly attracting interest from rival clubs. According to a report in AS, Enzo Fernandez is a prime target for both Real Madrid and Manchester City, potentially disrupting Alonso’s plans for the upcoming season.
Real Madrid’s interest in Fernandez dates back to 2026, as previously reported by TEAMtalk, and the appointment of Jose Mourinho as their new manager is expected to bolster their confidence in securing the Argentinian midfielder. Manchester City, under the soon-to-be-appointed Enzo Maresca, also represent a potential destination for Fernandez.
Fernandez arrived at Chelsea in January 2023 for a fee exceeding €120 million (£103.4m, $139.7m), making him the most expensive signing in Premier League history. While the club are currently reluctant to sell, AS reports that the player’s potential desire to move, coupled with the need for funds following a 10th-place finish and failure to qualify for European competition, could force their hand. The report suggests BlueCo, Chelsea’s ownership group, are preparing for a “mega-clean-up” of the squad.
Alongside Fernandez, Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, and Marc Cucurella have also been identified as players who could depart Stamford Bridge this summer. Transfer insider Graeme Bailey has reported Manchester United’s long-term interest in Palmer, while Barcelona are actively pursuing Joao Pedro. Cucurella is also attracting attention from Manchester City and Atletico Madrid. The potential departures of these players highlight the scale of the challenge facing Alonso as he seeks to rebuild the Chelsea squad to his liking.
The situation underscores the significant changes expected at Chelsea this summer as Alonso attempts to reshape the team and return them to contention for major honours. A mass exodus of key players could provide funds for new signings, but would also require Alonso to quickly integrate new talent into the squad.
