Julian Alvarez’s potential departure from Atletico Madrid has taken a significant turn, with Barcelona reportedly withdrawing from the race to sign the Argentinian forward due to the anticipated transfer fee. The 26-year-old Alvarez has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain this summer, with a potential price tag reaching up to €150 million.
Barcelona, despite holding Alvarez in “high regard” according to Sport, are unwilling to meet the substantial financial demands associated with the transfer. Even with the likely departure of Robert Lewandowski, the club’s current financial situation prevents them from pursuing what they deem a ‘historic’ signing. The Catalan club are prioritizing fiscal responsibility and are not prepared to enter a bidding war for Alvarez.
Atletico Madrid are not actively seeking to sell Alvarez, but would consider offers in the region of €150 million. The forward has enjoyed a productive season with 20 goals and nine assists in 49 games across all competitions, making him one of the most sought-after players in Europe. However, Alvarez is reportedly content with his life in Madrid and is not pushing for a move, which could complicate negotiations for Arsenal and PSG.
According to FootballTransfers’ algorithm, Alvarez is already valued at €111 million, ranking him as the 13th most valuable player globally. His peak Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) reached €129 million, suggesting Atletico’s €150 million valuation is not unreasonable. Should Alvarez depart, Atletico Madrid have identified several potential replacements, including PSG midfielder Kang-In Lee, Barcelona attacker Ferran Torres, Marseille winger Mason Greenwood, Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero, and Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella. A significant sale would provide the funds necessary to reshape Diego Simeone’s squad for the upcoming season.
This development leaves Arsenal and PSG as the frontrunners for Alvarez’s signature, potentially sparking a fierce competition for the Argentinian’s services. Securing Alvarez would represent a major coup for either club, significantly bolstering their attacking options and challenging for top honors.
