Manchester United are reportedly leading the race to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United this summer, while also expressing interest in Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis. According to Corriere della Sera, United are ‘in pole position’ to secure the services of the Italy international midfielder, with Newcastle’s asking price proving prohibitive for Serie A clubs. The report suggests that if Tonali does depart Newcastle, United are prepared to make a move.
Tonali has impressed in the Premier League since joining Newcastle, drawing comparisons to Andrea Pirlo from Newcastle manager Eddie Howe. Howe highlighted Tonali’s technical ability and passing range, but also emphasized his surprising athleticism and defensive work rate in comments made to BBC Sport in December 2024. The 24-year-old has established himself as a key player for the Magpies.
Alongside the pursuit of Tonali, United are also monitoring Christos Tzolis. Gazet van Antwerpen reports that United are among several clubs, including Aston Villa and Juventus, showing interest in the 24-year-old Greek international. Tzolis has enjoyed a prolific season with Club Brugge, scoring 19 goals and providing 24 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions. Club Brugge are anticipating a significant offer for the winger, potentially a Belgian record transfer fee.
Rebuilding the midfield is a priority for United following the departure of Casemiro, and the club is also considering Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde as a potential replacement. However, the immediate focus appears to be on securing Tonali, with co-owners INEOS planning a significant summer transfer window. Michael Carrick is also expected to remain as the permanent manager, according to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey. Securing Tonali would provide a dynamic and creative presence in midfield, while adding Tzolis would offer further attacking options.
