Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez is reportedly set to join Paris Saint-Germain, despite reported interest from Arsenal and Barcelona. Spanish journalists Jose Antonio Martin Otin and Roberto Gomez have both indicated that Alvarez has made his decision, favouring a move to the French capital. Gomez told Radio Marca, as relayed by Sport, that “The team the player wants is PSG.”
Arsenal had previously held talks with Alvarez’s representatives, according to sources, exploring a potential deal for the Argentina international. The former Manchester City player is understood to be open to leaving Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2026. During his time at Manchester City, Alvarez won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and one Champions League.
Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour recently expressed his desire to see Alvarez at the Emirates Stadium. Parlour suggested that Gabriel Jesus may depart at the end of the season and believes Alvarez would be a “great addition” to Mikel Arteta’s squad, praising his pace and impact during his time at City. He emphasized the benefit of adding another striker to raise the overall standard within the team.
Arsenal currently have Viktor Gyokeres as their primary striker, signed from Sporting CP last summer, with Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus providing further options. However, Parlour believes Alvarez’s arrival could provide valuable competition and improve the overall quality of the attacking options. The potential move for Alvarez comes as Arteta looks to strengthen his squad ahead of another Premier League title challenge.
Barcelona’s interest appears to be hampered by financial constraints, with Gomez stating they “don’t have the money to sign him.” This leaves PSG as the clear frontrunners for Alvarez’s signature, potentially bolstering their attacking lineup as they aim to compete at the highest level in both domestic and European competitions.
