1.FC Köln and West Ham United have reached an agreement in principle regarding a loan deal for Edson Álvarez, according to Sky Germany. The 28-year-old Mexican international is now potentially set for a move to the Bundesliga after previously being linked with a transfer to Borussia Dortmund.
Álvarez joined West Ham from Ajax in August 2023 for a reported fee of £34.5 million, becoming a key figure in David Moyes’ midfield. He made 32 appearances across all competitions for the Hammers last season, playing a crucial role in their Europa League campaign. However, with the arrival of new midfielders at the London Stadium, his game time could be limited in the upcoming season.
The primary obstacle to finalizing the agreement currently lies in Álvarez’s salary expectations. 1.FC Köln are reportedly seeking a significant reduction in his wage package to accommodate the loan move. The club, nicknamed the Cathedral City club, are hoping Álvarez will be willing to accept a pay cut to secure regular first-team football in Germany.
Competition for Álvarez’s signature exists from clubs in the Turkish Süper Lig, with several unnamed teams having submitted offers. Despite these alternatives, the report indicates that Álvarez has already gathered positive information about Köln, including details about the club’s passionate fanbase, the vibrant atmosphere at the RhineEnergie stadium, and the city itself. This positive feedback has encouraged the Bundesliga side to accelerate their efforts to complete the transfer.
Álvarez previously excelled at Ajax, winning multiple Eredivisie titles and the KNVB Cup during his four seasons in Amsterdam. His strong defensive capabilities and passing range would provide a valuable asset to Köln’s midfield. Should the loan move materialize, it would provide Álvarez with the opportunity to experience Bundesliga football and potentially reignite his career after a period of adaptation in the Premier League. The move would also bolster Köln’s squad depth as they prepare for the upcoming Bundesliga season.
