Julian Alvarez has expressed his desire to leave Atlético de Madrid, stating he believes a transfer is the best outcome for all parties. The Argentina international revealed his intentions to reporters following his nation’s 2-0 victory over Austria at the World Cup on Monday evening, adding he is attempting to be honest about his future. Alvarez stated he has already discussed the possibility of a departure with Atlético officials and wants to fulfil his “dream”.
Alvarez, 26, has become a key figure for Atlético since joining the club, consistently contributing goals and assists in La Liga. However, his recent comments suggest a desire for a new challenge, potentially with a club better positioned to compete for major honours. While he did not specify his desired destination, reports quickly surfaced linking him with a move to Spanish rivals Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
According to L’Équipe, Real Madrid previously submitted a bid of €150 million for Alvarez, which Atlético rejected. Despite Atlético publicly maintaining that Alvarez is “not for sale”, The Athletic reports that discussions have progressed between the player and FC Barcelona. Barcelona’s interest comes as they seek to bolster their attacking options, and Alvarez’s versatility would be a significant asset to Xavi’s squad.
Financial constraints at Barcelona could prove a hurdle, however, given the size of the fee Atlético previously demanded from Real Madrid. It remains to be seen whether Barcelona can structure a deal that satisfies Atlético and fits within their financial capabilities. Alvarez’s departure would leave a significant void in the Atlético attack, requiring Diego Simeone to seek a suitable replacement. A move to Barcelona would offer Alvarez the opportunity to play for one of Europe’s most historic clubs and compete at the highest level.
