Manchester United are set to alter their summer transfer strategy following the decision to reintegrate Marcus Rashford into the first-team squad under new head coach Michael Carrick. The development casts doubt on a potential move for West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville, according to reports.
Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona, where he impressed with 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, contributing to the club’s Spanish Super Cup and LaLiga title wins. Despite the player reportedly believing a permanent transfer to Barcelona was likely, the Catalan club allowed their £26million option to buy to expire.
Barcelona have since moved for Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, leaving Rashford to consider his options. Sources indicate that United are now prepared to welcome the 28-year-old back into the fold if a transfer away from Old Trafford doesn’t materialize this summer. Talks between Carrick and director of football Jason Wilcox have confirmed Rashford will not be placed in a ‘bomb squad’ situation.
United had previously identified Summerville as a target to strengthen their left wing options, with plans to fund the transfer using revenue generated from Rashford’s potential sale. However, The Athletic reporter Laurie Whitwell revealed on the United podcast Stretford Paddock that Rashford’s possible return has prompted a U-turn in the club’s pursuit of the Dutchman. Whitwell stated the financial implications of keeping Rashford on such a high salary make it difficult to simultaneously bring in another player in the same position.
Sky Sports had reported on July 1st that Summerville was a ‘top’ and ‘leading’ target for United, and the player himself was believed to favour a move to Old Trafford despite interest from Chelsea and Liverpool. West Ham are understood to have a £40million relegation release clause in Summerville’s contract, potentially rising to £50million with bonus clauses. Initial exploratory talks between the clubs had reportedly taken place.
Instead of pursuing Summerville, United are now reportedly prioritizing a deal for Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, with INEOS viewing the left-back as a long-term successor to Luke Shaw. The club is prepared to offer £60million for Hall. Meanwhile, reports from Fabrizio Romano suggest United are also internally discussing potential midfield targets from Real Madrid, though not Aurelien Tchouameni.
