Arsenal have accelerated their interest in Roma midfielder Manu Koné, reportedly reaching an agreement with the player’s representatives, according to reports in Italy. The move comes as Roma consider potential departures to meet Financial Fair Play obligations and generate transfer revenue.
Koné, who recently featured for France at the Copa América, has attracted attention from several clubs, including Atlético Madrid, but is said to favour a move to the Premier League champions. The 23-year-old joined Roma in 2023 and has established himself as a key component in Daniele De Rossi’s midfield. His performances have increased his market value, making him a valuable asset for the Italian club.
Roma are seeking a fee of €50 million for Koné, which would represent a significant profit given his remaining book value of approximately €12 million on the club’s balance sheet. This potential €38 million profit is crucial for Roma to comply with UEFA’s settlement agreement and avoid restrictions on future transfer activity. The club must finalize player sales by June 30th to meet these requirements.
Roma manager Daniele De Rossi would prefer to retain Koné, recognising his importance to the team, but acknowledges the need for player sales to facilitate other signings. The club is also exploring the possibility of selling forward Fabrizio Soulé to generate funds, but interest from Borussia Dortmund and Aston Villa has so far been limited to initial inquiries. Should a concrete offer for Soulé not materialise within the next week, the likelihood of Koné’s departure will increase.
Roma are also considering potential replacements in midfield, with Sassuolo’s Ismael Koné and Danilo of Botafogo among the names being discussed. The potential sale of Koné could trigger a domino effect of incoming transfers as Roma prepare for their return to the Champions League and the club’s centenary year.
