Arsenal are reportedly nearing an agreement to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United, according to former Premier League scout Keith Wyness. Wyness suggests the deal is “close enough” to be completed, despite previous bids being rejected by Newcastle.
Guimaraes informed Newcastle of his desire to leave several weeks ago, following the departures of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali. The Brazilian midfielder has been a key figure for the Magpies, but Arsenal’s interest has prompted him to consider a move to London.
Arsenal are believed to have made multiple attempts to secure Guimaraes’ signature, but Newcastle have so far held firm on their valuation. Wyness believes the player holds significant leverage in the negotiations, stating that if Guimaraes is determined to join Arsenal, the Gunners may be able to structure a deal that Newcastle will accept.
Newcastle are reportedly seeking a fee of £100 million for Guimaraes, but sources indicate that the player wasn’t actively pushing for a move and was willing to leave the decision to the club. However, recent reports suggest Arsenal have stepped back from pursuing the player, potentially as a tactic to gauge Guimaraes’ commitment.
Despite this, Wyness believes Newcastle are aware of the situation and may ultimately concede to Guimaraes’ wishes. Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s head coach, reportedly does not expect Guimaraes to refuse training, unlike Alexander Isak, who previously expressed his desire to leave. Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022 and quickly established himself as a vital component of the team’s midfield, contributing both defensively and offensively. A move to Arsenal would reunite him with the Champions League, a competition Newcastle qualified for last season but may struggle to consistently reach without key players like Guimaraes. Should the transfer materialise, it would significantly bolster Arsenal’s midfield options as they prepare for another title challenge.
