Arsenal are reportedly preparing a move for RB Leipzig defender Lutsharel Geertruida, potentially derailing a transfer that appeared close to completion with Liverpool. The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at Sunderland, making 30 appearances and contributing to their seventh-place Premier League finish and subsequent Europa League qualification.
Liverpool had previously reached a full agreement on personal terms with Geertruida, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, with the deal heavily influenced by former manager Arne Slot, who previously worked with the player at Feyenoord. However, negotiations with both Sunderland and Leipzig proved too complex to finalize before the transfer window closed.
Now, according to CaughtOffside, Arsenal have identified Geertruida as a target for the right-back position, leading to a “direct transfer battle” with Liverpool. The club’s board are said to be impressed by his versatility, as he is capable of playing both right-back and centre-half, as well as his experience in multiple European leagues.
Leipzig are currently seeking a fee of €25 million (£21 million) for Geertruida, a slight increase on the €23 million (£20 million) option to buy included in Sunderland’s loan agreement. This price point could represent a bargain for a player with Premier League experience and the ability to feature in multiple positions.
Arsenal are reportedly assessing potential replacements for Ben White at right-back, with Geertruida’s name on a shortlist that also includes Ezri Konsa of Aston Villa and Aaron Wan-Bissaka of West Ham United. The club has already approved a potential sale of White, indicating a willingness to strengthen the position. Should Geertruida arrive at the Emirates, he would provide competition and cover for Jurrien Timber.
