Mikel Arteta is poised to be offered a new contract by Arsenal this summer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The news comes as the Gunners prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Budapest later this month, marking their first appearance in the competition’s showpiece event in two decades.
Arteta took charge of Arsenal in December 2019, inheriting a club that had fallen from prominence. He has since overseen a significant revitalization, with the team currently challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title with three games remaining. This potential double success has prompted the Arsenal board to act swiftly to secure Arteta’s long-term future.
While Arteta’s current contract runs until 2027, the club are keen to extend his stay, with plans for a new deal already decided in March regardless of the final league position. Romano reports that Arteta is focused on winning titles but is enthusiastic about the ongoing project at the Emirates Stadium and eager to begin negotiations.
Arteta’s current annual salary is reported to be around €11.5 million (£10m). He may seek a raise to match the earnings of his Champions League final opponent, Luis Enrique, who is also expected to sign a new four-year deal with PSG worth €20m per year. Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone currently earns the highest managerial salary globally at €26m per year.
Having managed nearly 350 games for Arsenal, Arteta has secured 214 victories, with his teams scoring 690 goals. His tenure has yielded one major trophy – the FA Cup – but with the team’s current form and position, further silverware appears imminent. The club’s progress under his leadership is seen as justification for a significant increase in his remuneration.
Securing Arteta’s future is a key step for Arsenal as they look to build on their recent success and establish themselves as a consistent force in both domestic and European football.
