Mikel Arteta is poised to be offered a new contract by Arsenal this summer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The news comes as the Gunners prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Budapest later this month, marking their first appearance in the competition’s showpiece event in two decades.
Arteta took charge of Arsenal in December 2019, inheriting a team that had fallen from prominence. He has since overseen a significant turnaround, steering the club back into contention for major honours. Currently, Arsenal are challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title with three games remaining in the season, and a historic double is within reach.
While Arteta’s current contract runs until 2027, the Arsenal board are keen to extend his stay, with plans for a new deal reportedly decided in March regardless of the team’s end-of-season results. Romano reported via X that Arteta is focused on winning titles but is enthusiastic about the long-term project at the Emirates Stadium.
Arteta is currently earning approximately €11.5 million (£10m) per year. Discussions over a new deal may see him seek parity with coaches like Luis Enrique, who is also set to sign a new four-year contract with PSG worth €20m annually. Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone remains the highest-paid manager globally, earning €26m per year.
In his near 350 games in charge of Arsenal, Arteta has achieved 214 victories, with his teams scoring 690 goals. He has already delivered an FA Cup title and is on the cusp of adding further silverware to the club’s trophy cabinet. His impact has been transformative, revitalizing a club that had struggled for consistency in the years prior to his arrival. A new contract would represent a significant show of faith from the Arsenal hierarchy and solidify Arteta’s position as a key figure in the club’s future.
