Atletico Madrid have identified Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella as a priority transfer target this summer, according to Marca. Sporting Director Mateu Alemany is reportedly keen to significantly strengthen the team’s defence and views Cucurella as a substantial upgrade over current left-back Matteo Ruggeri.
The 27-year-old Cucurella previously spent time in La Masia, Barcelona’s famed youth academy, and has publicly expressed a desire to return to Spain. He stated earlier this year that he “wouldn’t think twice” about a move back to Camp Nou, and that he is happy with his family in Spain. While Barcelona have been alerted to his availability, they are currently prioritizing a deal for Joao Cancelo and may only pursue Cucurella if Alejandro Balde departs.
Atletico’s pursuit is considered more realistic, however, and Alemany is prepared to invest heavily in securing Cucurella’s signature. The plan involves creating space on the wage bill through potential departures of Jose Maria Gimenez and Clement Lenglet, allowing David Hancko to focus solely on a central defensive role.
Cucurella joined Chelsea in 2022 from Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported fee of £62 million. He has two years remaining on his current contract with the Blues, and Chelsea may be compelled to consider offers if a contract extension cannot be agreed upon. He is currently preparing to represent Spain at the upcoming World Cup, having established himself as a regular member of the national team squad. A move to Atletico would likely see him become a key component of Diego Simeone’s defensive setup, adding both quality and experience to the backline.
