Atlético Madrid are continuing negotiations with Juventus to secure a permanent transfer for forward Nico González, according to reports in Italy. The Argentina international spent last season on loan with the Spanish club, making 37 appearances and scoring five goals across all competitions.
González’s desire is to return to Atlético, and manager Diego Simeone has been a key advocate for bringing the player back to the club. Simeone views González as a crucial component in rebuilding Atlético’s challenge for Champions League qualification and a return to the top of La Liga. The former Fiorentina player missed out on the 2022 World Cup squad due to injury, but is currently featuring for Argentina in the ongoing tournament.
Negotiations between Juventus and Atlético are focused on the financial terms of the deal, with a fee exceeding €25 million already agreed in principle at the end of last season. Discussions are now centered on whether the transfer will be structured as a loan with an obligation to buy, a direct permanent transfer, or potentially involve other players moving in the opposite direction. Juventus have previously expressed interest in several Atlético players, opening up the possibility of a player-plus-cash deal.
Juventus are also reportedly considering Alexander Sorloth as a potential reinforcement for their attack, with the 30-year-old identified as a target to address a perceived lack of depth in the squad under manager Massimiliano Allegri. However, the priority remains finalizing a deal for González. The presence of González at the World Cup could potentially delay the completion of any transfer until the tournament concludes, as both clubs will likely want to avoid distractions during the competition. The move would see González reunite with a club where he made a noticeable impact despite a relatively modest goalscoring record, and provide Simeone with a player he clearly values.
