Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been left out of Olympique de Marseille’s squad for their match against Le Havre on Sunday, following an incident at the club’s training ground, according to reports from RMC Sport. The 36-year-old forward was reportedly involved in an altercation with teammates during a team retreat at the Commanderie training centre.
The incident involved what L’Équipe describes as an impromptu ‘colony holiday’ style gathering that escalated. During the event, the personal belongings of teammate Bob Tahri were reportedly sprayed with a fire extinguisher as part of a prank. Club officials Alain Juster and incoming successor Stéphane Richard met with the players on Friday, where Aubameyang is said to have offered an apology to Tahri.
Aubameyang joined Marseille in July 2023 on a free transfer after his contract with Chelsea was terminated. He has scored eight goals in 26 Ligue 1 appearances for the club this season, becoming an important, though sometimes controversial, figure in the Marseille attack. His arrival was intended to bolster Marseille’s attacking options and provide experience in European competition.
The disciplinary action comes at a critical time for Marseille, who are currently battling for a European qualification spot in Ligue 1. The club has experienced a turbulent season, marked by inconsistent performances and managerial changes. This latest incident adds to the off-field distractions and raises questions about team discipline. The club has not commented on the length of Aubameyang’s exclusion from the squad beyond the immediate fixture against Le Havre.
