Barcelona have been presented with the opportunity to sign Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana for a reported fee of €30 million, plus variables, according to Sky Sport CH. Chelsea are keen to move on the centre-back this summer after a difficult spell at Stamford Bridge following his arrival from Leicester City in 2022 for a fee of €80.4m.
Fofana’s time in London has been hampered by injury, most notably a serious knee injury sustained during his first season. He missed the entirety of the 2023-24 campaign and managed only 14 appearances last year. This season saw an increase in playing time, with 34 appearances and 27 starts, totaling 2,400 minutes, and a goal, but he was left out of the squad for crucial matches against Paris Saint-Germain and Leeds United.
The offer to Barcelona was initiated by Fofana’s representatives, who have indicated Chelsea’s willingness to sell. While Barcelona have previously expressed interest in Chelsea’s Joao Pedro and Marc Cucurella, this represents a direct approach regarding Fofana. The club are considering Fofana as one of several options to bolster their backline during the summer transfer window.
Barcelona’s preferred method of acquisition would be a loan deal with an option to buy, mirroring the arrangement they attempted with Marcus Rashford. However, Chelsea are reportedly seeking a permanent transfer. Currently, Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni remains Barcelona’s primary target for the centre-back position, though a deal is not yet certain. The Catalan club anticipate receiving numerous player offers in the coming months as clubs look to offload players.
Securing Fofana could provide Barcelona with a physically imposing defender, but the club’s financial situation and pursuit of Bastoni suggest he is not a priority target. A move for Fofana would likely depend on the outcome of negotiations with Inter and Barcelona’s overall budget for the summer.
