Brentford FC have emerged as the frontrunners to sign 1. FC Köln forward Said El Mala, with the Premier League club reportedly prepared to meet the Bundesliga side’s valuation of the player.
According to Sport Bild, El Mala has indicated to teammates within the Köln dressing room that a club is willing to pay the €50 million asking price, with Brentford identified as the likely suitor. The 19-year-old has also reportedly given ‘clear indications’ to his colleagues that he anticipates departing Köln after just one season, with a move to Brentford the most probable outcome.
Brighton & Hove Albion were previously considered strong contenders for El Mala’s signature, but negotiations stalled due to their unwillingness to exceed a bid of €35 million plus performance-based bonuses. This difference in valuation appears to have opened the door for Brentford to capitalize and position themselves as favourites.
El Mala enjoyed a breakthrough season with Köln, establishing himself as a key component of their attack. He contributed significantly with goals and assists, showcasing a promising skillset that has attracted attention from multiple Premier League clubs. His potential inclusion in Germany’s squad for the upcoming World Cup could further increase his market value and appeal.
While Brentford currently lead the chase, other Premier League clubs are continuing to monitor the situation. Chelsea and Newcastle United have both been linked with an interest in the young attacker, suggesting potential competition could still emerge. However, Brentford’s willingness to meet Köln’s financial demands currently places them in a strong position to secure El Mala’s services. A successful transfer would provide Thomas Frank with another exciting attacking option as Brentford look to continue their impressive Premier League campaign.
