Brighton and Hove Albion have expressed interest in signing Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara, potentially complicating Manchester United’s pursuit of Carlos Baleba, according to the Daily Mail. Camara, who currently plays for Monaco, has attracted attention from several Premier League clubs following a season where he scored three goals in 32 appearances for the Ligue 1 side.
Camara is currently participating in the World Cup with Senegal, having helped his side progress from the group stage as one of the best third-placed teams. He is valued at approximately €40 million (£35m) by Monaco. Manchester United have previously scouted the 22-year-old as they look to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the 2026-27 season.
However, Brighton’s interest stems from anticipating potential offers for Baleba, who has been a long-term target for United. Last summer, United pursued Baleba but withdrew from negotiations due to Brighton’s reported asking price of over €115 million (£100m). The Athletic reports that while United continue to monitor Baleba, their interest is not as fervent as it was during the previous transfer window.
United are also continuing their efforts to revamp their midfield despite a knee ligament injury sustained by Uruguay’s Manuel Ugarte at the World Cup. Ugarte, who arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 for €48.8 million (£42.1m), has reportedly struggled to establish himself at Old Trafford. The club are prioritizing a move for West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes, although they are yet to meet the Hammers’ €98 million (£85m) valuation.
Fernandes, a standout performer for West Ham despite their relegation to the Championship, is also attracting interest from Arsenal, Real Madrid, and PSG. Tottenham Hotspur are also considered strong contenders for his signature. United are simultaneously nearing the completion of a €40.5 million (£35m) deal to acquire Brazil international Ederson from Atalanta, as reported by BBC Sport. This potential acquisition could offer further competition in the midfield.
