Burnley have announced the permanent signing of Florentino Luis from Benfica, formalising a move that was anticipated following a season-long loan spell at Turf Moor. The 26-year-old Portuguese defensive midfielder joined the Clarets last summer with an automatic purchase obligation, which has now been triggered despite the club’s immediate relegation to the Championship.
According to L’Équipe, the transfer was agreed several months ago, with the obligation activated during the course of the season. Florentino featured in 33 matches across all competitions for Burnley, with 31 of those appearances coming in the Premier League. He established himself as a regular starter in the league, making 25 starts and providing two assists, though he did not score any goals.
Florentino began his career with Benfica, progressing through their youth system before spells with Monaco and then a return to Benfica prior to his loan to Burnley. He has also represented Portugal at youth levels. His arrival at Burnley last summer was seen as a significant addition to their midfield, providing a shield for the defence and offering composure in possession.
The automatic purchase obligation, despite Burnley’s relegation, suggests the club view Florentino as a key component of their plans for the future. His commitment to the club is a boost as they aim to achieve promotion back to the Premier League and rebuild under a new manager. The move provides Florentino with a stable platform to continue his development and contribute to a team with clear ambitions.
