Cagliari have moved to strengthen their midfield with the signings of Harry Winks from Leicester City and Jacopo Fazzini from Fiorentina, according to reports from Italy. The club confirmed the double acquisition on Wednesday, as they reshape their options in the centre of the park following the departures of Gaetano, Sulemana, and Folorunsho.
Winks, 30, joins Cagliari on a permanent transfer after a season with Leicester, which culminated in relegation to League One. The Englishman previously played in Serie A with Sampdoria during the 2022-23 campaign, but his time there was hampered by injury. He spent the majority of his professional career at Tottenham Hotspur, from 2014 to 2022, establishing himself as a Premier League midfielder.
Alongside Winks, 20-year-old Fazzini arrives on an initial loan deal from Fiorentina, with a reported loan fee of €750,000 and a purchase option between €7 and €8 million. Cagliari’s new sporting director, Pietro Accardi, is familiar with Fazzini from his time at Empoli, where he oversaw the youngster’s development. Fazzini’s opportunities at Fiorentina were limited last season, making 20 Serie A appearances and 11 in the Conference League without scoring.
Reports indicate that Fazzini struggled for consistent playing time under coach Paolo Vanoli, gradually falling out of the starting eleven. Cagliari is seen as an ideal destination for the player to gain regular minutes and further his development. The club also announced a significant change in their medical staff, with Marco Scorcu departing after 34 years of service. These moves signal Cagliari’s intent to build a competitive squad ahead of the upcoming Serie A season, with both Winks and Fazzini expected to play key roles in midfield.
