Fede Valverde handed one-match ban, will miss Real Madrid's Mallorca trip
Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde has been given a one-match suspension following his red card against Atletico Madrid last weekend. The Spanish Football Federation's Competition Committee confirmed the sanction on Wednesday, dismissing the club's appeal against the dismissal.
The Uruguayan was sent off in the derby victory for a strong challenge on Atletico's Alex Baena. The Technical Committee of Referees had already supported referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero's decision, leaving the Competition Committee to determine the length of the ban. According to reports from Diario AS, the committee opted for the minimum one-game suspension for serious foul play, a relief for Madrid as a two-match ban was a possibility.
Valverde will now miss Real Madrid's first La Liga fixture after the international break, an away match against Mallorca on 5 April. His availability returns for the crucial following match against Girona, though squad rotation ahead of the Champions League quarter-finals could influence his selection regardless.
The absence is a minor setback for Carlo Ancelotti's side, given Valverde's consistent and influential form in the heart of midfield this season. The ruling provides clarity and allows Madrid to plan for the Mallorca game without one of their key players, but ensures he will be available for the decisive run-in.
