Canada national team manager Jesse Marsch has publicly criticised former Olympique de Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi over his handling of midfielder Ismaël Koné during their time together at the French club. Marsch, speaking on CBS Sports, labelled De Zerbi a “real a**hole” in reference to Koné’s limited opportunities with Marseille.
Koné joined Marseille following a successful season with Watford, however, his time in France proved largely unsuccessful. He featured in only nine matches for the club before securing a loan move to Stade Rennais, which later became a permanent transfer to Sassuolo for a reported €13 million.
Despite the difficult period at Marseille, Marsch praised Koné’s resilience and determination. He stated that the player “remained strong, never doubted himself, found a new situation and now he is resplendent,” highlighting Koné’s positive form since joining Sassuolo. The coach’s comments suggest a clear frustration with De Zerbi’s management of the young midfielder.
Koné’s move to Sassuolo appears to have revitalised his career, offering him consistent playing time and the chance to showcase his abilities in Serie A. The transfer represents a positive outcome for both the player and the Italian club, who have acquired a promising talent. The situation has led to some lighthearted suggestions of a “Front Anti De Zerbi,” with Eric Fouda jokingly named as its president.
This criticism from Marsch adds to the narrative surrounding De Zerbi’s sometimes abrasive management style, and could potentially impact his future recruitment. Koné, meanwhile, seems to have put the experience behind him and is focused on establishing himself as a key player for Sassuolo.
