Milan owner Gerry Cardinale is reportedly dissatisfied with the club’s recent form and the atmosphere surrounding the team following protests at San Siro, according to reports in Italy. The club’s failure to secure Champions League qualification could trigger a significant overhaul of the management structure.
Cardinale had envisioned a different trajectory for the 2025-26 season, and despite currently holding more points than at the same stage last year, he is disappointed with the team’s performances over the past two months. The protests from supporters have further fueled his concerns. Cardinale has consistently expressed his desire to win and has invested heavily in the club, with plans for continued investment.
The project launched last May, which initially saw Milan top the Serie A table and comfortably in Champions League contention, now appears to be faltering. This raises questions regarding technical decisions, potentially leading to the appointment of new directors and a new head coach, as well as economic implications, including another season without Champions League revenue and a likely negative balance sheet unless key players are sold.
While Milan will participate in European competition next season, the financial and prestige difference between competing in the Champions League, Europa League, or Conference League is substantial. The club is urging unity and focus on securing a top-four finish in the remaining two Serie A matches against Genoa and Cagliari. Achieving this would still see them qualify for the Champions League.
Following the conclusion of the Serie A season on May 24th, a comprehensive review will be undertaken, evaluating both the successes and failures of the campaign. Particular scrutiny will be given to the transfer activity, which has largely been deemed unsuccessful, with only Luka Modric and Adrien Rabiot proving to be positive additions. Chief Executive Officer Furlani, Sporting Director Tare, Technical Director Moncada, and advisor Ibrahimovic will all be held accountable. The future of head coach Stefano Pioli is also uncertain. The club is reportedly considering a complete restructuring of the leadership if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.
