Manchester United’s interest in Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong has been met with resistance, according to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs. United were reportedly considering a move for the 20-year-old during the summer transfer window, but Chelsea have indicated they have no intention of selling the player.
Acheampong has progressed through Chelsea’s youth academy and has established himself within the first team squad. Primarily a right-back, the England Under-21 international is also capable of playing as a central defender, offering tactical versatility. His potential has also attracted attention from other clubs, including Liverpool and speculation in Spain linking him with a future move under incoming Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho.
Despite interest from multiple clubs, Jacobs reports that Chelsea view Acheampong as “untouchable,” though the player himself may be open to a transfer if his playing time at Stamford Bridge remains limited. Chelsea are expected to sign another centre-back this summer, potentially further reducing Acheampong’s opportunities. The arrival of a new manager could also influence his role within the team.
Manchester United currently have several central defenders in their ranks, including Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven, but the club’s new ownership group, INEOS, are reportedly keen to explore market opportunities to strengthen the squad ahead of their Champions League campaign and potential Premier League title challenge. While a right-back isn’t seen as an immediate priority, the co-owners are willing to invest in quality additions. Acheampong’s versatility could have been appealing, but Chelsea’s firm stance appears to have ended United’s pursuit for now.
