César Azpilicueta has announced his retirement from professional football at the end of the current season, bringing an end to a 19-year career. The 36-year-old, currently playing for Sevilla FC, revealed his decision on social media Friday, citing a desire to begin a new chapter in his life.
Azpilicueta has played 798 official matches for club and country, representing Osasuna, Olympique de Marseille, Chelsea, Atlético de Madrid, and Sevilla. He enjoyed the most success during his decade-long spell with Chelsea, where he captained the side and lifted numerous trophies including the Champions League, two Premier League titles, and two Europa League titles. He also won a UEFA Nations League title with Spain and two Coupe de la Ligue and two Trophée des Champions titles with Marseille.
Chelsea paid tribute to Azpilicueta, stating, “Congratulations on a superb career, Azpi, and thank you for everything.” The defender joined the Blues in 2012 and quickly became a fan favorite, known for his versatility, leadership, and commitment.
Prior to his move to London, Azpilicueta established himself as a key player for Olympique de Marseille, contributing to their domestic success. He later had spells with Atlético Madrid and a return to Spain with Sevilla, where he is currently concluding his playing career. His final season with Sevilla has seen him continue to demonstrate his professionalism and experience.
Azpilicueta’s retirement marks the end of an era for both Chelsea and Spanish football, leaving a void in terms of leadership and defensive quality. His career serves as an example of dedication and longevity at the highest level of the sport.
