Chelsea are reportedly causing a “crisis” at Rayo Vallecano with their pursuit of left-back Pep Chavarria, according to reports in AS. The London club, now managed by Xabi Alonso, are seeking to add depth to their squad following the sale of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid.
Rayo Vallecano recently reached the final of the Conference League, losing to Crystal Palace, but have already experienced upheaval with the departure of successful manager Inigo Perez to Villarreal. The potential loss of Chavarria represents another significant blow for the Madrid-based club, continuing a trend of successful players being poached by larger teams.
Chavarria, 28, offers experience and attacking impetus, qualities Alonso believes are necessary to complement Chelsea’s existing options. While the club initially indicated trust in players like Jorrel Hato to fill the left-back role, Alonso has identified Chavarria as a specialist in the position. Rayo previously benefitted from having both Alfonso Espino and Chavarria competing for the role, but Espino has since moved to Racing Club in Argentina.
Chelsea have already submitted offers of €9 million and €15 million, but Rayo are holding firm, demanding that the €50 million release clause in Chavarria’s contract be met. The club is reluctant to sell without a suitable replacement identified, a situation that is currently stalling negotiations. Personal terms between Chelsea and Chavarria are not believed to be a barrier to a potential deal.
The situation could prolong as Chelsea weigh up whether to meet Rayo’s valuation or remain patient. Chavarria is reportedly keen on the move, suggesting a deal may eventually be struck, but as of now, Chelsea face a decision between increasing their offer or continuing to wait. This transfer could provide Chelsea with a more experienced option at left-back, while Rayo Vallecano would need to reinvest the funds to maintain their competitive edge.
