Chelsea have initiated discussions with Werder Bremen regarding a potential transfer for 19-year-old centre-back Karim Coulibaly, according to TEAMtalk. The Bundesliga defender is expected to be sold for a club-record fee of €50 million this summer, attracting interest from several top European clubs including Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.
Coulibaly enjoyed a breakout season with Bremen, establishing himself as a key player in their squad. While reports in Germany suggest the teenager favours a move to PSG, Chelsea are attempting to secure his signature. The club’s interest signals a potential strengthening of their defensive options ahead of the new season.
In separate news, Chelsea have confirmed the permanent transfer of attacker Tyrique George to Everton. The 20-year-old spent the latter half of the previous season on loan with the Toffees, making 11 appearances. Everton initially allowed their original purchase option to expire, seeking a revised agreement which ultimately saw them pay a fee of up to €28 million, while relinquishing a 15% sell-on clause.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria is reportedly causing concern for the Spanish club, per AS. Rayo Vallecano are facing a shortage of options at left-back and are reluctant to sell the 28-year-old, currently pointing to his €50 million release clause. Chelsea may need to wait until Rayo Vallecano secure a replacement before a deal can be finalised.
Furthermore, acquiring Maxi Araujo from Sporting CP is anticipated to be a challenging task. Araujo’s agent, Martin Rodriguez Nader, told El Espectador Deportes that Sporting CP are financially secure and unwilling to sell players cheaply, highlighting the difficulties in prising the Uruguay international away from the Portuguese club. Araujo impressed both domestically and at the World Cup last season, further complicating any potential transfer.
