Chelsea have completed the signing of Marco Palestra from Atalanta for a reported fee of €50 million, the club confirmed on Wednesday. The 21-year-old Italian right-back has signed a seven-year contract with the Premier League side, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until June 2033. Palestra will join his new teammates for pre-season training under manager Xabi Alonso.
Palestra’s move to Chelsea follows a successful loan spell with Cagliari during the 2025-2026 Serie A season, where he featured in 37 matches. He contributed one goal and four assists for the Rossoblù, establishing himself as a promising talent in Italian football. Prior to the move, Inter Milan had also reportedly shown interest in acquiring the young defender.
The Italy international has earned two caps for the national team and is viewed as a rising star within the new generation of Italian players. His arrival at Chelsea addresses a need for depth and competition at right-back, providing Alonso with another option in a key position. The defender’s age and potential align with Chelsea’s strategy of building a team around young, dynamic players.
Palestra is the fifth signing Chelsea have made during the summer transfer window. Emmanuel Emegha, Dastan Satpaev, Denner, and Geovany Quenda have already agreed deals to join the club, signaling a period of significant investment and squad rebuilding. These acquisitions suggest Chelsea are aiming to challenge for top honors in both domestic and European competitions next season. The influx of new talent will likely increase competition for places within the squad and provide Alonso with more tactical flexibility.
Chelsea finished in the top four last season, securing Champions League qualification, but will be looking to close the gap on the Premier League title contenders. The addition of Palestra, along with the other summer signings, is intended to strengthen the team’s overall quality and competitiveness. The club hopes that these new additions will contribute to a sustained period of success.
